An Ode to Ode
by Jim Jarrett

Review from a series of Vocalconnection's seminars at AIDS Project Los Angeles

Reader's Digest has a section in their magazine called "The most unforgettable character I have ever met." This statement typifies my feelings about Ode Wannebo. From the moment he greets you with his Basso-Profundo voice, "Hi, I'm Ode Wannebo." it immediately registers in your mind that this is a man with incredible strength who really has something to tell you.

In only two short teaching classes at APLA, he opened new doors and vistas for all of us on how to better control and manage our singing voices. Although rather simple in theory, the way he presents the three basic principles of good singing is phenomenal and always humorous. I have had several voice teachers and coaches in my life, but none can equal what Ode has taught me so quickly -- It always works!!

By now I'm sure I have piqued your curiosity. I could stop right here and make you come to one of Ode's classes to find out, but that would be cruel and I have an urgent need to share this with you. Ode's presentation of "The diamond method" is far more humorous than I can put on paper. If you should come to his classes, ask him about the "prim and proper" Danish lady -- he'll know what you mean.

We're all grateful to Ode for his time and effort in giving and showing us the tools of professional singers. We're equally grateful to APLA for providing the space and opportunity to meet Ode.

In this day and age of uncertainty about so many things including life itself, it's nice to know that a once shepard boy of Norway, who sang melodious scales to his animals from the plateaus of Norwegian meadows and later arias to opera audiences, is here with us sharing his knowledge and life's experience.
